    Australia Self-Drive

Many visitors to Australia choose to concentrate their visit in the south and east of the country, concentrating on the beautiful cities of Melbourne and Adelaide.
  • Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia after Sydney. It is located on the large natural bay known as Port Phillip, with the city centre positioned at the estuary of the Yarra. Although founded in 1835, it was during the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s that it was transformed into one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities. Today, it is a centre for the arts, commerce and, entertainment. It is particularly popular with sports enthusiasts with its famous cricket grounds, its Aussie rules football team, and is home to the Australian Golf Open and the world famous Melbourne Cup horse race.

  • Adelaide is the fifth-largest city in Australia, a coastal city situated on the eastern shores of Gulf St Vincent, on the Adelaide Plains, north of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Named in honour of Queen Adelaide, the German-born consort of King William IV, the city was founded in 1836 as the planned capital for a freely settled British province in Australia. Adelaide was designed on a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parkland. Today, Adelaide is noted for its many festivals and sporting events, its food, wine and its cafĂ© culture.

  • The drive between the two cities takes visitors along the Great Ocean Road. Built by returning soldiers between 1919 and 1932, this is the world's largest war memorial, dedicated to casualties of World War I. The road wines through varying terrain alongside the coast, and provides access to several prominent landmarks.
