  • Historic Galle was known as Gimhathiththa before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, when it was the main port on the island. The Galle fort is a world heritage site and the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. Other prominent landmarks in Galle include the natural harbour, the National Maritime Museum, St. Mary's Cathedral founded by Jesuit priests, one of the main Shiva temples on the island, and several historic luxury hotes.
  • YALA National Park is the most popular park with a vast array of animals including deer, peacock, elephant, wild buffalo. The lucky visitor may even get to see the elusive leopard and bear. Hotels stays can be arranged in good quality accommodations close by and there are self-catering bungalows in the park, but bookings must be made well in advance for availability. Camping can also be organized.
  • BUNDALA National Park near Hambantota) A wildlife sanctuary particularly noted for its abundant birdlife which attracts twitchers from all over the world.. Flamingos are often seen here during the northeast monsoon. Elephants sometimes retreat to the Bundala saltpans during the drought.
